چکیده

Wireless and wireline communication applications demand A/D converters with MHz signal bandwidth and 14b or better resolution. Compared with switched-capacitor (SC) implementations, continuous-time (CT) Σ∆ modulators have the advantages of lower power consumption and intrinsic anti-alias filtering. Moreover, as the sampler is inside of the CT Σ∆ loop (see the upper half of Fig. 3.5.1), any sampling error is noise shaped together with the quantization noise. Thus, key non-idealities of the front-end sampling network in SC modulators [1] are avoided. Prior implementations of CT Σ∆ modulators in CMOS have either narrow bandwidth [2] or limited dynamic range [3]. In this work, a proposed CT Σ∆ modulator architecture combined with multi-bit quantization and nonreturn-to-zero (NRZ) DAC pulse shaping achieves 88dB dynamic range over 1.1MHz input signal bandwidth.

A Continuous-Time Modulator With 88-dB Dynamic Range and 1.1-MHz Signal Bandwidth

This paper presents the design and experimental results of a continuous-time modulator for ADSL applications. Multibit nonreturn-to-zero (NRZ) DAC pulse shaping is used to reduce clock jitter sensitivity. The nonzero excess loop delay problem in conventional continuous-time modulators is solved by our proposed architecture. A prototype third-order continuous-time modulator with 5-bit internal q...

ISSCC 2018 / SESSION 19 / SENSORS AND INTERFACES / 19 . 5 19 . 5 A Current - Measurement Front - End with 160 dB Dynamic Range and 7 ppm INL

Accurate current measurement is crucial in many biosensing applications, such as the detection of neurotransmitters [1] and the monitoring of intercellular molecular dynamics. This need has become even more critical recently with single-molecule biosensors where sub-pA signal currents are superimposed on a slowly varying nA-to-μA background current, as is the case with nanopores [2]. As such, t...

A Time-Interleaved Continuous-Time Modulator With 20-MHz Signal Bandwidth

This paper presents the first implementation results for a time-interleaved continuous-time modulator. The derivation of the time-interleaved continuous-time modulator from a discrete-time modulator is presented. With various simplifications, the resulting modulator has only a single path of integrators, making it robust to DC offsets. A time-interleaved by 2 continuous-time third-order low-pas...

A selectable - bandwidth 3 . 5 mW , 0 . 03 mm 2 self - oscillating Sigma Delta modulator with 71 dB dynamic range at 5 MHz and 65 dB at 10 MHz

In this paper we present a dual-mode thirdorder continuous time Σ∆ modulator that combines noise-shaping and pulse-width-modulation (PWM). In our 0.18 μm CMOS prototype chip the clock frequency equals 1GHz, but the PWM carrier is only around 125 MHz. By adjusting the loop filter, the ADC bandwidth can be set to 5 or 10 MHz. In the 5 MHz mode the peak SNDR equals 64dB and the dynamic range 71dB....

A 1V 1mW Digital-Audio ∆Σ Modulator with 88dB Dynamic Range using Local Switch Bootstrapping

A 1V, 1mW, 14 bit delta-sigma modulator in a standard CMOS 0.35-μm technology is presented. A modified symmetrical bootstrapped switch is used in order to allow rail-to-rail signal switching. A single-loop third-order topology with an oversampling ratio of 100 achieves a dynamic range of 88 dB, a peak SNR of 87 dB and a peak SNDR of 85 dB in a signal bandwidth of 25 kHz. Introduction The demand...
